Do I Need To Know SEO To Be A Freelance Writer?

When you start your career as a freelance writer, one term you are probably going to notice quickly is SEO. SEO stands for search engine optimization and is basically a way to ensure that your website or any particular content you create is more noticeable.

The internet is a great resource and one that is, in the vast majority of cases, a necessity in the digital age we now live in, but it’s also highly competitive. This means that SEO is very important because your clients will want their content to be easily findable and high up in search engine rankings.

Keywords are one of the most common ways of manipulating SEO but there’s more to it than just that. To be a successful freelance writer you’ll need to know how to carefully and naturally use SEO keywords to build an informative, high-quality piece while also ensuring that it reads well.

You can’t just insert keywords anywhere! Writing, as I am sure anyone reading this knows, is an art form and takes practice to perfect. Search engines use algorithms to monitor SEO and other factors to decide on a website’s ranking but knowing exactly what they look for is tricky.

Regardless, SEO is vital because it’s commonly used in digital marketing. If you want a successful career in freelance writing then I’d recommend you start researching SEO right now! However, with that being said, while SEO is very important, do not worry too much if you’re unfamiliar with it right now.

You can still start freelance writing even if you don’t really know a lot about SEO just yet. This will, of course, limit the jobs you can take but there are plenty of clients out there who either won’t care about SEO or will simply want something writing that doesn’t require SEO. I wasn’t overly familiar with SEO when I started out freelancing but it didn’t hold me back!

It did make it a little more difficult to find clients and even when I did get the basics down I still made the odd mistake. It’s so easy to get carried away with links and keywords but I am going to share some SEO basics with you, so you can learn from my failures. If you doubt the importance of knowing about SEO for your freelance writing career, then check out some of the things it can do for you.

SEO – The First Few Steps

SEO is very vast and it’s impossible to learn everything straight away, but that’s OK you can still wright high-quality SEO pieces, even if you only know the basics. And I can help you with that let’s take a look at some of the first steps towards writing SEO content.

SEO isn’t all about keywords links can be hugely beneficial when it comes to increasing the visibility of your website. You can use all kinds of links as well; you can link to other areas of your website, to similar articles and much more. Don’t overdo it though because you don’t want to bombard the reader with links.

Yes, keywords are the most well-known area of SEO and for good reason; they can really help with visibility. Remember, keywords should be placed in all content,  such as meta descriptions, URLs, anchor text and even in images through ALT text. But remember you need to include them naturally.

Social Media Sharing

It isn’t over once the content is done, you need to get out there and start sharing it! Social media is a powerful tool when it comes to digital marketing so once a piece is done don’t be afraid to share it on social media. This can help build more links and will help increase a piece’s visibility in the search rankings.
